On September 11, 2025, an insightful panel discussion took place at Restaurant Rampe in Aarau, where war reporter Kurt Pelda and Ukraine-born, Switzerland-based Svitlana Altherr shared their perspectives on the current situation in Ukraine. The event was moderated by Fabian Hägler, editor-in-chief of the Aargauer Zeitung.

Russia’s Economic Pressure and Prospects for Peace
Pelda, who has been reporting from Ukraine for years, offered a surprisingly hopeful assessment of the war’s development. He emphasized that Russia is under significant economic pressure and might be forced to end the war if no rapid military successes are achieved. Pelda stated, “If the West does not respond, Putin will expand the war.”
The Role of the West and the Risk of Escalation
Both speakers warned of the potential expansion of the conflict. Pelda highlighted that hesitant action by the West could encourage Russia to extend the war to other European countries. He compared the current situation to the period before World War II and stressed the need to set clear boundaries against aggressive actions.
The Importance of Ukrainian Civil Society
Svitlana Altherr, actively involved in humanitarian aid in Ukraine, emphasized the remarkable resilience of the Ukrainian population. She noted that, despite the difficult circumstances, a strong, self-organized civil society exists, contributing decisively to the country’s resistance.
A Call for Decisive Action
The discussion underlined the urgency of responding to the current situation. It was particularly emphasized that Switzerland, as a neutral country, should actively strengthen and expand its humanitarian aid on the ground in Ukraine. Decisive action on both political and societal levels is essential to pave the way for a just peace.
